THOMAS DENNIS BRN 1841 CORNWALL, CAME TO KEWEENAW IN 1863; HE HAD STARTED WORKING AS A MINER AT AGE 10 IN CORNWALL; WORKED AT PEWABIC MINE 13 YEARS, THEN WENT ON TO QUINCY AS ASST. MINE CAPTAIN.

TWO CORNISHMEN WERE THE ONLY 2 LOCAL STOCKHOLDERS WITH SIGNIFICANT HOLDINGS AT QUINCY MINE IN 1899: SB. HARRIS - 500 SHARES; AND W.E. PARNALL WITH 200 SHARES.

MARRIAGE:

IN 1864 CAPT DENNIS RETURNED TO ENGLAND TO MARRY MARY ELIZABETH MARTIN, ALSO A CORNISH PERSON.

BIOGRAPHICAL:

JOHN CLIFF CAME TO AMERICA FROM HIS NATIVE CORNWALL IN 1854 AT AGE 21, AND BECAME ASST. CAPT AT QUINCY; HAVING HAD LONG EXPERIENCE AS CAPTAIN IN THE REGION.

WILLIAM REYNOLDS CAME TO THE COPPER COUNTRY FROM HIS NATIVE ENGLAND IN 1851 WITH HIS WIFE, ELIZABETH (ADAMS), AND SETTLED IN QUINCY. IN 1869 HE MOVED UP TO CALUMET, AND REMAINED WITH C & H UNTIL HIS DEATH IN 1883.

WILLIAM HOSKENS DIED 1 JUNE 1893.

FREDERICK HARPER, BRN CORNWALL 5 OCT 1675, LEFT ENGLAND 1902. IN 1907 HIS GIRLFRIEND, BESSIE DRISCOLL CAME TO U.S. FROM ST. AUSTELL. THEY WERE MARRIED 28 NOV 1907 IN PEWABIC METHODIST PARSONAGE ON QUINCY HILL. HE DIED 10 MAY 1959; SHE DIED 12 NOV 1959, AND ARE BOTH BURIED IN FOREST HILL CEMETERY, HOUGHTON.

MARTIN VERRAN WAS BORN IN CHACEWATER, ENG., SON OF JOHN VERRAN AND SUSANNAH (WOOLCOCKO; THEIR 4 CHILDREN WERE ALL BORN IN ST. BLAZEY, NAMELY; MARY ANN BRN 13 APR 1834; JOHN MARK BRN 1 FEB 1835; THOMAS HENRY BRN 26 MAR 1837. MARTIN CAME TO AMERICA WITH A BROTHER, AND MINED IN KEWEENAW. THE BROTHER DIED IN A MINE ACCIDENT; THE FAMILY THEN MOVED TO PENNSYLVANIA.

THOMAS WHITTLE WAS BRN 1 JANY 1845 IN TRURO, CORNWALL. ABOUT 1870 HE LEFT FOR SOUTH AMERICA AND SPENT 5 YEARS IN CHILIAN COPPER FIELDS. IN 1877 HE MOVED NORTH AND WORKED AT QUINCY AS A TIMBERMAN; DIED 1912.

BAPTISM:

RUBE AND MARY TREBILCOCK SETTLED AT PEWABIC ABT 1874, HAVING COME FROM CLIFF MINE. ON 20 AUG 1875, THEIR SON WILLIAM JAMES WAS BAPTIZED.

JAMES AND EDWARD TREVILLIAN WERE MEMBERS OF THE CHURCH 14 JAN 1881.

MARSHALL ELDRED BRN CORNWALL 1575 CAME TO AMERICA 1902. IN 1907, HIS GIRLFRIEND, BESSIE CAME OVER FROM ST AUSTELL. THEY MARRIED IN PEWABIC METHODIST CHURCH. THEY HAD 4 CHILDREN HE DIED 24 JAN 1952 IN ESCANABA, MI.

DEATH:

REV STEPHEN POLKINGHORNE BRN CORNWALL, 61 YRS EARLIER, WAS APPOINTED TO PEWABIC IN 1912; DIED 1 JUNE 1915; FUNERAL WAS FROM PEWABIC 3 JUNE 1915.

1852 JAMES PASCOE CAME FROM CORNWALL AND BEGAN HIS MINISTRY AT PECKFORD, MI (WITH WIFE, MARTHA); HE DIED IN CALIF IN 1937.

BIOGRAPHICAL:

WILLIAM CLEMENS CLEMO WAS BORN IN HOMEBUSH, CORNWALL NEAR ST. AUSTELL 14 FEB 1840, AND CAME TO AMERICA WHEN AGED 24, HAVING GRADUATED WITH A MEDICAL DEGREE. HE THEN ENTERED THE MINISTRY AND AT AGE 64 CAME TO PEWABIC. HIS FIRST WIFE WAS RACHEL E BROWN WHO DIED 1882. HIS SECOND MARRIAGE WAS TO IDA L. FULLER OF PINCKNEY, MI. HE DIED SEPT 1907 AT HIS HOME IN AU SABLE, MI.

IN 1890 THERE WAS AN ATTEMPT BY LOCAL RESIDENTS TO ESTABLISH A METHODIST CHURCH: CHAIRMAN J.W. WILLIAMS WITH JAMES HARRIS AND JOSEPH SNELL.TWO WITNESSES TO PRESIDING ELDER A.R.BARTLETT'S SIGNATURE WERE: CATHERINE M BARTLETT & LILIA J. KING. DOCUMENTED NOTARIZED I MAR 1890.

BOSTON STATION CHURCH WAS INCORPORATED 1 SEPT 1900. REV. RICHARD HANCOCK, MATTHEW NETTELL, JOHN POLKINGHORN, FELIX BEST, JOHN LAVERS, FREDERICK J. TREVENNA, JOHN HOOPER, JOCOB H. HOSKING, AND GEORGE A THOMAS WERE ALL INVOLVED. (THERE IS A NOTE SAYING THIS INFORMATION IS FROM BROTHER JOSEPH HOCKING WHO JOINED THE CHURCH INTHE FALL OF 1877.

WILLIAM T. CRAGO'S WIFE, ANN, WAS BRN IN CORNWALL; BILL AND ANN RETURNED TO CORNWALL IN 1913 FOR THE WIFE WAS ILL AND HAD TO HAVE HER LEG AMPUTATED. SHE THOUGHT SHE WAS GOING TO DIE BUT LIVED TO BE IN HER 90S IN ENGLAND.

OSCEOLA CHURCH:

JOHN CRAGO BUILT A HOME IN OSCEOLA AFTER HAVING COME FROM ENGLAND; HE HAD 12 CHILDREN.BERNARD RICKARDS LIVED IN OSCEOLA, HAVING COME HERE FROM LISKEARD, ENGLAND.

AMONG SHAREHOLDERS OF OSCEOLA STOCK IN 1899 WERE AUGUST NETTLE, OF HANCOCK - 170 SHARES; OF HOUGHTON, WILLIAM BATH 400 SHARES; OF HANCOCK, JAMES DUNSTAN WITH 200 SHARES; AND OF CALUMET, JAMES PHILLIPS WITH 700 SHARES.

7 NOV 1877 LEONARD PELLOW AND MARY ANN RALPH FROM CORNWALL.

24 NOV 1877 JOHN PASCOE OF OSCEOLA AND MARY JANE WILLIAMS OF HANCOCK.

UNDATED- HENRY PARSONS OF CORNWALL MARRIED MARY JANE CUDLIP BRN IN HURONTOWN. NETTIE PARSONS GEORGE BRN CALUMET WAS THE GRANDDAUGHTER OF JOHN CUDLLIP AND MARY ANN HAM, BOTH OF CORNWALL. JOHN CUDLIP WAS BRN IN CORNWALL AND EARLY CAME TO AMERICA TO WORK IN THE COPPER MINES. HE LOST HIS LIFE IN THE FAMOUS OSCEOLA MINE FIRE OF 1895. RESCUE MEN FOUND JOHN SITTING PEACEFULLY DEAD, AFTER HAVING BEEN SMOTHERED IN THE FIRE. HIS WIDOW LIVED UNTIL ABOUT THE AGE OF 90, WITH HER GRANDDAUGHTER, NETTIE GEORGE. SHE DIED 19 MAR 1923 AND WAS BURIED IN HOUGHTON.

CLIFTON METHODIST CHURCH

A PIONEER FAMILY IN KEWEENAW WAS THE SMARTS OF CAMBORNE. JAMES SMART (WIFE MARY) AND HIS FAMILY MIGRATED TO U.S. IN 1845 COMING EARLY TO EAGLE HARBOR TO WORK THE MINE. THEY BROUGHT 3 CHILDREN, THOMAS, CAROLYN, AND ELLEN (AGE ABT 1 YR.). LEONARD MAUNDER'S MOTHER WAS JESSIE MARKS, DAU OF ELLEN SMART. LEONARD MAUNDER MARRIED RITA HOLMAN. (ANOTHER NOTE SAYS EMALINE BROWN'S MOTHER, MARY, WAS SISTER TO JESSIE MARKS, LEONARD'S MOTHER).
