GOODSOLE of Calumet and Miss Maggie C. CARPENTER, of Lake Linden. 1882 July 13-PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED-On Monday morning Edward (The County Deaths name him Edwin) WATERS, age 36, died in a mine explosion. A miner in the Hecla branch, was startled by a rush of air and a loud report, and on investigating found that a mine blast had gone off. Mr. WATERS was seen earlier with four boxes of blasting powder and somehow it went off killing him. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND, son of John and Mary Ann. He left a wife and several children. CRIMINAL CASES- The people versus James NETTLE, verdict guilty of assault. The people versus Richard GERMAN, pled guilty of larceny. 1882-JULY 20 -PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED-1882 July 18 Tuesday- At the Congregational parsonage, Hancock- Mr. James DAVY to Miss Anna TRENNARY, both of Ishpeming, Marquette County, Michigan. DIED-1882 July 13 Thursday- John HOAR, Jr., aged 39 years, died his home at Houghton. He was the youngest son of Capt John HOAR, an old and prominent businessman of this place. He lived most all of his life in Houghton. He was buried at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. DIED-1882 July 16 -John BOLEN, aged 24y ears, at the residence of his brother at Houghton, he died of consumption. He was single, leaving a mother and brother. DIED- Last Friday morning, Mathias OLITIVEO, a miner at the Osceola mine was killed by falling rock. A blast had been fired and he went to see its effects, when the rock gave way and crushed him. DIED-Last Sunday afternoon sail boat containing eight persons, two of whom were women, capsized in Portage Lake and Mr. and Mrs. John LASSE and Mrs. BLANCHETTE, all 3 were drowned. The LACASSE's leave three small children. 1882 July 27 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN PROBATE RECORD-In the matter of the estate of Exilda DOLOR; Frank ZENO and Joseph ST ARMOUR, all minors, Exilda RICARD asked to be appointed their guardian. DIED-Last Monday morning Thomas WHITE, aged 41 years, an old and trusted employee as an engineer at the smelting works, was crushed to death by the dock-hoisting machine. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND, the son of James and Margaret. He was a widower. MARRIAGE- Last Thursday evening at the Congregational church, Hancock, Mr Arthur W. NOBLE of Ishpeming, Marquette County, Michigan and Miss Lizzie J. daughter of Johnson VIVIAN , superintendent of the Franklin mine. The bride was attended by Miss Charity HARRIS and Miss Clara LABRAM and the groom by Will VIVIAN and Johnson VIVIAN, Jr. 1882 August 3 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- The two LORRIE children of Allouez, Keweenaw County who were lost in the woods for 8 days were found by Andrew OLSON; of Hecla and Alfred JOHNSON, Eric Ericson and Charles LARSON of Calumet. They lived on berries. 1882 AUGUST 17- PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- Mr Gilbert LAMBERT, for 12 years employed in the Calumet store, will move to Mascouche, Canada East about September 15. He will go into business for himself. NEWS ITEM- On last Monday morning Alexander SULLIVAN , a drill carrier in the Hecla mine, while unloading drills from a skip in No 2 shaft, was struck by falling rock and seriously injured. He had a fractured skull, the right arm and right leg broken and a few cuts. His recovery is uncertain. 1882 August 24 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED- 1882 August 18 Friday last, James CRAWFORD, aged 62 years, died at his home in Eagle River, Keweenaw County. He was among the earliest settlers on Lake Superior, being removed from New York City to Keweenaw Point in 1845. He never tried to take a prominent position in affairs. The funeral at Eagle River cemetery was last Sunday. 1882 Auguast 31 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED- Last Sunday John W. WATERS, employed as a miner at the Hecla mine, died from fever at the boarding-house of R. BASTIAN at Red Jacket. He was buried on Tuesday at the Calumet cemetery. He leaves a wife and four children in CORNWALL, ENGLAND where he was born. 1882 September 14,PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN- Adams Township 1882 September 12--- Notice is hereby given that my son , Christian MESSNER, has left my home without any just cause or provocation . This is to notify all persons that I will not be responsible for any debts that he may incur. SIGNED- Christian MESSNER, Sr. DIED- 1882 September 12 At the Atlantic mine, Mrs. William C. TONKIN, aged 24 years. Funeral services will be at Trinity church, Houghton on Thursday. The remains will be buried at St Thomas, Ontario, Canada. 1882 September 21 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- John STANTON while unloading the barge SMITH, last Tuesday, had a piece of coal falling on his right foot from about 25 feet and smashing his right foot. DIED- Last Sunday afternoon, a little girl, Mary, aged 2 and a half years, daughter of John John LACOSS, while playing around GREGORY's sawmill fell from the log runway and was drowned. DIED- Last Saturday Nick PISHLONG, a laborer in the Quincy mine, was killed by a piece of rock falling on him. DIED- Last Friday William ROBERTS, Jr., aged 42 years, a mechanic at the Allouez mine, Keweenaw County, died of stomach cancer. His remains were sent the following day to Pottstown, Pennsylvania. 1882 September 28 PORTAHE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIAGE- George RUSSELL of Butte City, Montana came to this area for a bride and carried away one of Lake Linden's daughters, Miss DWTER. (? DWYER) DIED- Last Friday Patrick FLEMING, a miner in the Quincy mine, while at work in the No 3 shaft at the 5th level, attempted to move some dirt and lost his balance. He fell away to the 7th level, crashing his head and died at once. Five years ago his father died in a premature explosion in the Quincy mine. 1882 October 5 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED- 1881 September 27 At Worcester, Massachusetts, Rev Robert M. HIGGINS of Calumet, Michigan and Miss Helen M. FITTS of Worcester, Mass. NEWS ITEM- Last Saturday Charles RETALLICK of Calumet, while attempting to board a train standing at the trestle work at the stamp mill, was thrown down by the sudden starting of the cars , and fell to the ground , a distance of over 20 feet, breaking both legs. MARRIAGE- 1882 October 1 At the home of the bride's parents, Mr and Mrms A. McNAUGHTON; Rev A. R. PE NNIMAN of Pontiac ,Michigan and Miss Anna belle McNAUGHTON of Lake Linden. MARRIAGE- Last Wednesday afternoon, Mr WALLS of the firm WATSON and WALLS, of Alouez, Keweenaw County and Miss Julia GARNER of Seneca. The groom's parents live in Hancock. 1882 October 12 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DEATHS- Last Tuesday morning four men were killed in the Republic Mine, Marquette County; by a rockslide. They were-John CONNELL, aged 45 years, married; Ron ERICKSON, aged 34 years, single; Robert ROBERTS, aged 16 years; Peter BOWER, aged 16 years. Thomas HOOPER, badly injured, aged 30 years, married, may die. 1882 October 19 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED- 1882 October 12 At the residence of the bride's parents at Houghton, Mr. George ENSWORTH of Hancock and Miss Kate MIRELE, of Houghton. MARRIED- 1882 October 14- At the Quincy mine, at the residence of the bride's mother, Mr John Schrack NICHOLLS, of Beacon, Marquette County and Miss Eliza Jane ROBERTS of Hancock. 1882 October 25-PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED- Last Tuesday morning, John HITCHINGS of Houghton, died suddenly at his home. He was buried at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton on Wednesday. NEWS ITEM- On Tuesday last, James D. RYAN, a miner at the Calumet and Hecla mine, became entangled in the man engine on the fifth level , fracturing 2 ribs and his knee. 1882 November 2 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED- Last Saturday Mike DALY was married, is having a serious honeymoon. He was taken sick the same day with congestion of the lungs. He is said to be in a serious condition. DEATH- Last Monday Katie,, age 17 years, the daughter of Mr and Mrs William and Elizabeth RICHARDS, of Calumet, died of inflamation of the bowels. 1882 November 9 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DEATH- Last Monday evening John MICHAELSON'S body startled men in the Tamarack mine as it fell past them to the bottom of the mine. He died Tuesday morning. 1882 November 16 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN PROBATE ORDER- 1882 November 6 - In the matter of the estate of Kitty Adams WHEELER and Mabel Louise WHEELER, minors, their mother Maria F. WHEELER asked the court to be made their guardian. MARRIED- 1882 November 14 - At the residence of the bride's parents, Calumet- Mr. Lucius W. KILLMAR and Miss Mary MERTON, both of Calumet. MARRIED- Last Thursday Mr Richard Granville RICHARDS and Miss Grace Billing Jane LETCHER, both of Lake Linden. 1882 November 23 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED- 1882 November 18, At Trinity Church, Houghton, Mr James THOMAS and Miss Mary HARYMAN, both of Houghton. 1882 November 30 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED- The remains of Mr W. E. MANN were buried in the Calumet cemetery, where they will remain until spring when they will be shipped East. MARRIED- 1882 November 16, At Houghton, Mr Frank H. LYON of Calumet and Miss Jennie VAN ORDEN of Houghton. 1882 December 7 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN Last Tuesday George ROWE while walking near the Calumet blacksmith shop, slipped and fell upon a pile of iron, giving himself a severe jar. It's feared he was hurt severely internally. 1883 January 11 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DEATH- - Andrew Thomas, a miner, was killed today at the Pewabic mine by rock falling on him. MARRIAGE- At Hancock Congregational church last Thursday- Wm H. HARRIS of Hancock and Miss Maggie, daughter of Mr and Mrs James ROSS of Hancock. File contributed for use in Houghton Co.
